Hi Ken, Thanks for replying to my post. I can see why you thought it might be a Little Blue Heron but this bird was quite a bit bigger than the Little Blue also the length of the bill was twice that of the Little Blue. I also saw several Little Blues on this particular trip so I knew this was something different. It is either a Tricoloured Heron which is a uncommon migrant to Costa Rica or a non-breeding Agami Heron which is really quite rare . Hi Kathy, I'm not an expert on Central American birds but this one looks pretty similar to a Little Blue Heron Egretta caerulea – I was lucky to photograph several on my last trip to Puerto Rico.

This bird was take at Las Esquinas Rainforest Lodge in the far South East of Costa Rica. When I showed the picture to the resident guide he told me it was a Bare-throated Tiger Heron which I knew was wrong. The bird was skulking about in a small pond on the forest edge. Can any of you knowledgeable birders confirm the ID.
