Gruiformes – Rallidae
These birds are monogamous and very territorial; however, on sites which suit them best but are regrettably becoming scarce, a pair can nest at 20 meters from each other. The birds are very affectionate toone another; the male chooses the location of the nest and builds it elevated according to the water level. 6 in 10 eggs are laid and the couple takes turns to sit. The young are fed with small mollusks, insects and spiders but soon fend themselves.
This species is prey to numerous predators such as the very invasive Mink of America, the otter and many large birds such as Great bitterns, herons, harriers, owls, hawks…
It will perch to grab an occasional insect or bay or to watch its surroundings; it is perched here at about 1,30m high:
