Miss Blue-tailed – dinner’s ready!!



Prédation chez les libellules: Ishcnure élégante “casse la croûte” de bébé portecoupe! Ishnure elegans VS Enallagma cyathigerum

Non, rien de barbare dans cette scène parfaitement normale dans le monde des odonates où une libellule en mange une autre!

Les Agrions portecoupes sont extrêment nombreux et sont donc souvent et facilement prédatés, par d’autres odonates entre autres.

Pas vraiment du cannibalisme, les demoiselles étant d’espèces différentes.Blue-tailed Damselfly has dinner “with” a Common Blue Damselfly!

Not really a cannibalism scene but close. On this fabulous site where 10 odonates take off at every step, I was taking pics of something else when my eye perceived an unusual movement. My favorite form of Blue-tailed Damselfly! Its strange flight becomes clear…

Sous ce baiser de la mort, les mandibules de l’Ischnure s’appliquent à faire un trou dans l’exosquelette de sa proie pour atteindre les organes du thorax.

It has a sized prey in the mandibles, nested between the legs for a big cuddle… Well, maybe not!!!
The unfortunate Common blue is slightly bigger.

La proie, bien calée entre les 6 pattes du prédateur, tente de s’échapper en grimpant vers le haut de la tige:The prey, held tightly between the 6 legs, tries desperately to escape as it climbs towards the end of the grass blade:

L’ischnure poursuit en découpant les ailes puis sépare l’abdomen du thorax:The Blue-tailed goes on by slicing off the wings neatly then separates the abdomen from the thorax:

On peut voir ici que que l’ischnure est hautement parasitée sur les derniers segments de son abdomen:The Blue-tailed has quite a few parasites on the last segments of its abdomen:
