2 species of owl flies



Ascalaphe loriot – Libelloides ictericus -Neuroptera – Ascalaphidae

4 genders of owl flies divided into 14 species in Europe.This first one is a scarce insect for which I haven’t found the English vernacular name. It occurs around the Mediterranean dry countries and can be rarely found in about 4 French departments. We encountered this individual in Spain.

4 genres d’Ascalaphidae sont répartis en 14 espèces, celle-ci est une première pour moi! C’est le plus petits des Ascalaphes. On le trouve en Corse, Italie, Espagne et je suppose sur presque tout le pourtour méditerranéen; présent en France mais pas commun dans ces 4 départements: Hérault, Aude, Var et Pyrénées orientales. Cet individu a été photographié en Espagne dans un endroit aride et chaud avec peu de végétation et pas loin d’un petit point d’eau douce. Le soleil étant absent, il n’a hélas pas ouvert ses ailes:

Ascalaphe soufré Celui-ci est le plus commun des Ascalaphes, les imagos émergent en masse de la terre dans les champs fleuris où leurs larves ont passé l’hiver. Si le soleil s’absente dès que posés, ils referment leurs ailes en forme de V renversé!

Owly Sulphur Much more common, this other species are emerging from the ground in many flowery fields around my area. When they perch, they close their wings in an upside down V shape as soon as the sun is hidden.Females here, some ready to lay their eggs into the ground:
