Barred Owls are one of our more common owls. There are several near my home, so I get to see them pretty frequently. They are one of the first birds I photographed here after moving to Florida.
Wintering Birds of Lake Kawahara
Lake Kawahara is a small lake by the sea in Nagasaki prefecture, Japan. It is not far from Kabashima, one of the best places for spring and autumn migrants. Lake Kawahara is particularly attractive to thrushes and starlings, but smaller passerines also winter here as there is plenty of shelter for them in the forests […]
Sulfur-crested cockatoos
Sulfur-crested cockatoos are fun birds to watch. They carry on like drunken sailors on shore leave, making complete fools of themselves. Sydney Botanic Gardens is a good place to watch them in late afternoon.

Part of Sea Life Surveys’ work, along with taking groups out to experience the fantastic […]
Costa Rica Photo Journal by Don Getty – Part 2 of 3

Pasco County, 3/10/2013
This morning I birded West Pasco County with my new friend David Gagne. We had a fantastic time. My biggest hope was to see a Seaside Sparrow, and we found at least one at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park. We heard several Clapper Rails, a Virginia Rail and a Sora. We then went to the […]
Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus)
When I was down in Florida, the most common hawk that I saw was the Red-shouldered Hawk, while here in southeastern Massachusetts the Red-tailed Hawk is usually the Hawk that is seen. This late winter, however, the Red-shouldered Hawk is being observed by me more often. In fact, over my condominium complex. Here in the […]
Duck Romance
The duck couple I wrote about two weeks ago was mating on the pond in Brooklyn Bridge Park again today, Sunday, March 10, 2013. I photographed some of their courtship postures last time. Today I took a few shots of copulation, which is brief and happens in the water. They ended their courtship displays with […]
